A snout full of fresh air
Do you like dogs and bikes? If so, read on. If not…read on…
It was about 10 years ago in the Mission District in San Francisco. A great place to take in street theater. I was walking to dinner with a friend, and two blocks up I spotted an old-school motorcycle approaching with a side car attached. I’m not a motorhead but I was intrigued.
The driver had a kid, or so I thought, in his sidecar. A half block away, I realized that was no kid. It was…wait for it…a British Bulldog wearing a leather bomber jacket and flight goggles befitting a Royal Air Force pilot from WWII. Hilarious! Fantastic!
A new neighbor
Since that encounter, I’ve been on the hunt for cool dogs on bikes. So I was jazzed when Mason came on the scene as one of Bicycle Colorado’s new neighbors. Mason is a hound belonging to Geneva, one of the architects now working upstairs from us, where every day is Bring Your Pet to Work Day.
One of the many great things about Mason is how he travels to and from downtown Denver each day. Check out the photo. Yup, Mason rides with Geneva in a bike trailer. I needed to know more. So I headed upstairs for some Q and A and to give a few scratches behind the ears.

Four wheels and four paws
Q: How long has Mason traveled to work in a bike trailer?
A: It’s been about six years, give or take.
Q: I’ve seen you guys on the move. He seems to love it. Would you agree?
A: Yeah, he enjoys it a lot. He didn’t like his first rides at all, but now he really does, and people always point and laugh or smile. I get a lot of compliments and comments, like “he should be pulling you.”
Q: What’s the coolest place you’ve taken Mason in the trailer?
A: Well, given the rig and the weight, we’re somewhat limited on where we can ride, but I’ll often pack him up with the cooler on a nice summer day to join friends at a park.
Q: Do you loan him out? When I need some bike/dog therapy, can I take him for a ride?
A: Sure, but he’s pretty attached at the hip. He’s kind of like my shadow.
Ride on Mason, ride on! You’re an inspiration to your fellow canines everywhere. Maybe I’ll trying putting my cat in the trailer next time I ride to work. Maybe not.
