Colorado rates high for commuting and safety in latest bicycling benchmark study
Colorado rates toward the top for the number of people riding their bikes to work and safety while riding, according to new report from the Alliance for Biking & Walking. The report examines the hard data behind the growing movement for more bicycling and walking.
Bicycling and Walking in the United States: 2014 Benchmarking Report collects and analyzes data from all 50 states, 52 of the most populous cities (Denver and Colorado Springs are on the list) and—new to the 2014 edition—17 small and midsized cities, including Fort Collins and Boulder. The report traces the rise of walking and biking and explores its connection to health issues like obesity and diabetes.
Colorado is ranked No. 3 for the percentage of commuters who bike to work, No. 6 for low percentage of bicycle-related traffic fatalities.
The report also showed that Colorado has the lowest percentage of obese adults (20.7%) and the highest number of adults who get the minimum weekly recommendation for physical activity (61.8%).
We continue to see more people in Colorado choosing to ride their bike or walk to work, and that riding a bicycle is a safe activity for both transportation and fun. Thanks for your help making this happen.
