Ride the Legend: Tour of the Moon & American Flyers 40th Anniversary

The Tour of the Moon on September 13, 2025, showcases the Colorado National Monument and exemplifies the best of road cycling in the American West. Tour of the Moon was made famous in the 1980’s Coors Classic and later in the cycling movie American Flyers. This year offers a unique opportunity to ride the legendary route and see a special 40th anniversary showing of the movie itself!

40th Anniversary of American Flyers

In partnership with Tour of the Moon, celebrate the 40th anniversary of American Flyers on September 12th in Grand Junction, the day before the ride. Experience more than just the movie! Cycling legends Davis Phinney and Connie Carpenter-Phinney will attend the Grand Junction screening. Discover fascinating behind-the-scenes secrets, challenges, and dramatic moments from the intense month-long filming of the race sequences across Colorado’s breathtaking landscapes.

Legendary Ride

Just as in the movie, cyclists will take in the towering monoliths, sheer-walled red rock canyons, and panoramic views of the Colorado National Monument from the saddle of their bike. Both route options start and end in downtown Grand Junction.

  • 41-mile route: A ride through the Monument, then back via the Redlands and country roads.
  • 64-mile metric century: Extends through Fruita’s farm country with even more scenic miles.

Start to Finish Support

Beyond the epic scenery, the ride boasts stocked aid stations with plenty of hydration, fruit, and salty and sweet snacks. This year includes one water stop and four aid stations, along with SAG support for roadside assistance. After crossing the finish line, the celebration continues with a post-ride party featuring lunch, a beer garden, an expo, and live music by Shaffer Brothers Band.

Charity and Community

Need more reasons to ride? Giving back is at the heart of The Ride Collective’s events. Since 2012, they’ve raised nearly $1 million for local and national charities, increasing awareness and supporting groups in host communities. Bicycle Colorado is proud to be among the beneficiaries of the Tour of the Moon’s support for safer biking across our state.
